The Lonely Moon

A long time ago, the Moon was much brighter than it is now but lonely. During the day, the Sun would enjoy the company of the people. She watched them play, fish, dance and rejoice. However, at night, they would bolt their doors and go to beds quickly. They were afraid of the wild animals that used to hunt at night. The Moon was therefore always lonely and sad. He would look down at the village and say with a sigh, “Yet another night and not a person at sight.

I’m all by myself again.” Night after night, the Moon grew lonelier and became dull. One night, he saw an old woman who seemed to be lost in the forest. A tiger approached her quietly, crouching behind a huge rock. Seeing the woman in danger, the Moon shone brightly with all his might. The tiger was taken aback by the sudden bright light. It looked up and saw the Moon who looked like a giant fireball in the sky. Frightened, it ran away as fast as it could.

The old woman was moved by the Moon’s act and thanked him for coming to her rescue. She asked him how she could repay his kindness. The Moon replied, “I wish for nothing but to have friends like the Sun but at night, the people do not play, fish or dance. Thus, I am always lonely.

There is no one beside me.” The old woman then spoke, “Dear Moon, my body was buried in this forest after I died. Since I have lost my body, I cannot go back to my home, to my family, anymore. I am just as lonely as you are.” On hearing this, the Moon invited her to his home, the sky. The old woman happily accepted his invitation and ascended into the sky. He shared his light with her and she became a bright star. The Moon also welcomed all the other lonely and homeless souls who were wandering around without any hope. He shared his home and light with them. Soon, the dark night sky was full of twinkling stars.

The Moon could not shine as brightly as he did anymore as he shared his light with the wandering souls. However, he was happier than ever for there were stars in the sky now, who became his family and friends. He was never lonely again.
